Championship New Years Day preview: Rams head to managerless Wednesday

Well... Thank fuck that's over! 2021 is now here and we can all hopefully look forward to a prosperous New Year which will hopefully see us back in stadiums at some point, watching our beloved clubs.

Here we will look ahead to the opening Championship game of 2021.

KICK OFF TIME:

5:30pm at Hillsborough Live on Sky sports (football + main event)

TEAM NEWS:

Sheffield Wednesday will assess Joost van Aken (groin) and Adam Reach (hamstring), who both missed the home sides 2-1 win over Middlesbrough on Tuesday. Julian Börner and Massimo Luongo are also doubtful as they continue with their respective recoveries from injury. Matt Penney made his first appearance since September in midweek, coming off the bench to replace Josh Windass for the final ten minutes.

The academy product could be involved again on Friday.

Rooney's Rams will be without Martyn Waghorn, who serves the second game of his three-match ban.

Whilst Curtis Davies (Achilles) is a long term absentee, Tom Lawrence is also set to miss out with an ankle injury for the away side.

PREDICTION:

Tough one to call this, both sides have picked up lately with 2 wins in their last 3 matches. Wednesday won 2-1 against Middlesbrough last time out whilst Derby smashed Birmingham 4-0 at St Andrews. Confidence should be high in both camps which should mean an entertaining game. The two sides have met once before on New Years Day, all the way back in 1913. Wednesday were again the hosts that day with the score ending 3-3. Lets hope this New Years Day spectacle can match up to the last one between the 2 clubs.

Think I'll sit on the fence and opt for a draw.

WEDNESDAY 1 DERBY 1
