WATFORD v DERBY COUNTY 19.02.21
Watford are set to take on Derby County in a clash of two teams in flying form. Watford are coming off of back-to-back victories against Bristol City and Preston North End. Wayne Rooney’s Derby County have won five of their last six matches - most recently edging out Wycombe through a last-second Andre Wisdom goal.
The Hornets currently sit fourth place, well into the top six and only a couple of matches away from breaking into the automatic-promotion places. Derby County are standing six points clear of the drop zone and are on a positive trajectory.
Watford recently revealed club-captain Troy Deeney will be sidelined for an extended period of time following damage to his Achilles tendon. The Hornets, however, are not without options in attack - Joao Pedro has filled in admirably the past two matches. A speedy recovery is wished to Deeney, but as much of a legend as Deeney is to Watford, his absence will not be of too much concern when it comes to grabbing results. Watford’s recent switch to a 4-3-3 formation suits Pedro’s playing style more than it suits Deeney’s. Watford have picked up six points from six available in Deeney’s absence. Will Hughes is in line to make his first appearance against his former club. The central-midfielder initially was deployed out wide by Xisco Munoz. But now, since switching to the 4-3-3, he has played in his natural central position. The Hornets now have the perfect balance of midfield control, attacking threat through the wings, and defensive discipline.
Derby County will prove to be tough opposition for Watford. But, as long as Watford stick to their new tactics, they should be able to grind out another important home victory in the fight for promotion. Score Prediction: Watford 2-1 Derby County
